The Salvation Army of Greenville is approaching a critical need for food donations, according to Lauren Stephens, director of social services.

"I would say right now we are in our proverbial dry season, if you will, as far as donations are concerned," said Stephens. "Our food warehouse is pretty sad looking at the moment. We also recently just had our walk-in cooler go out over the weekend which meant everything that was in it is now a complete loss."

According to Stephens, donations are typically down this time of year. She said the cost of food could also be impacting donations.

"The cost of food impacts us very directly when it comes to donations as well as our ability to purchase the food that we prepare on campus for our residents," said Stephens.

Stephens said its food box program is being impacted by the low number of donations. She said there is a limited variety of foods.

"We’re not reducing services in any capacity, but I would definitely say that we’ve reduced the variety of what’s going into the food boxes because you can only need so many boxes of shredded potatoes that are in a bag," said Stephens.

The Salvation Army is encouraging people in the community to donate food items or donate monetarily. Stephens said some of the items they need include, individually wrapped items like crackers, apple sauce, or bags of potato chips; and microwaveable items like mac and cheese.
