HS BASKETBALL: Greenwood falls, Big Spring advances in playoffs

DENVER CITY – Levelland took control in the second half to knock off Greenwood in Friday’s Class 6A area playoff.

The Rangerettes were leading 22-18 at halftime before Levelland (32-3) went on a 27-8 run in the second half. Greenwood was held to only three points in the fourth quarter.

Karsyn Payton led Greenwood with 12 points, followed by eight from Delani Shockley. 

The Rangerettes’ season ends at 20-16.

The Loboettes advanced to face No. 3 Canyon in the regional quarterfinal round.

It was the second straight year Levelland beat Greenwood in the area round after winning the 2021 meeting by a score of 43-39.

Levelland (32-3) – Graf 10, White 9, Kent 18, Ca. Tienda 7, Ma. Ruiz 2

Halftime score – Greenwood 22, Levelland 18. Free throws – Greenwood 4-9, Levelland 12-14. 3-point goals – Greenwood 6 (Payton 3, Shockley 2, Savage), Levelland 7 (Kent 2, Tienda 2, Graf 2, White). Total fouls – Greenwood 15, Levelland 10. Fouled out – None.

FORT STOCKTON – Big Spring eliminated District 1-4A champion Clint Mountain View with a victory during Friday’s Class 4A area round playoff.

The Lady Steers (20-13) advanced to the regional quarterfinal round and will face No. 17-ranked Seminole (24-4) at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Andrews ISD Performance Center. Seminole was an 88-41 winner over Dumas.
